Thin films coating a solid cylindrical fibre: wetting and nonwetting scenarios

The linear dynamics of a very thin liquid film coating a solid cylindrical fibre are investigated in the limit of negligible inertia. The overall effects of long-range van der Waals (vdW) forces are incorporated through a disjoining pressure term proportional to the effective Hamaker constant A of the liquid-substrate pair. Two distinguishing regimes are identified, i.e., A>0 or dewetting liquid, and A<0 or wetting liquid. A leading-order lubrication model is provided herein in order to describe the long-term nonlinear dynamics of the film for both cases.
